Journey into Our World

DIW was created through the lens of a first-generation immigrant social worker. Growing up with dual consciousness, I often experienced the tension between my inner environment and the outside world. Straddling both my Hispanic and American cultures, I felt that neither fully aligned with my identity, leaving me to navigate the exhausting task of excelling in both areas. Through personal growth and education, I discovered that identities are complex, and each dimension deserves respect. I believe breaking generational cycles is a challenging and often solitary journey, but the reward is living a life grounded in your unshakable truth.

At DIW, we are committed to a multidimensional approach to mental health and wellness. Drawing on research, education, and personal experience, we work to reduce stigma and enhance overall well-being. We identify as a wellness center because we are passionate about addressing physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions to help individuals achieve a sense of wholeness. When one element is out of sync, it inevitably impacts the others. By focusing on frameworks such as cultural competence, harm reduction, and family systems, we aim to provide a holistic and inclusive approach to care.

My practice integrates both personal experience and academic training. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology, as well as a Master’s in Social Work. My passion for healthcare within social work was deepened through the Social Work Healthcare Education and Leadership Scholars (HEALS) scholarship, awarded by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) during my graduate studies. This opportunity heightened my awareness of how medical complexities can profoundly shape our lives and reinforced my dedication to supporting others on their journey to wellness.
